Pregnancy Brain

During pregnancy, your brain undergoes a lot of changes. I always encourage my mamas to get in tune with not only their body, but their mind prior to conception, during pregnancy, and as they emerge as a newly birthed mother.

Check out the amazing changes your brain goes through:

  • Pregnancy triggers significant changes in the brain's structure and function, a phenomenon known as neuroplasticity. The brain adapts to the new demands and challenges that come with pregnancy and motherhood

  • During pregnancy, there is a temporary reduction in gray matter volume in certain regions of the brain, particularly those involved in social cognition and the theory of mind. This change might help the mother develop a stronger bond with her baby and become more attuned to their needs

  • While gray matter may decrease in some areas, there is an increase in brain connectivity. This enhanced connectivity helps different brain regions communicate more effectively and work together to meet the demands of pregnancy and motherhood

  • Pregnancy can affect a woman's memory, especially during the third trimester and the postpartum period. Some women experience "pregnancy brain" or "momnesia," which involves mild forgetfulness and difficulty concentrating

  • Hormones play a significant role in shaping the pregnant woman's brain. Hormonal fluctuations, such as increased levels of estrogen and progesterone, affect neural circuits related to emotions, mood, and memory

  • A pregnant mama’s brain may exhibit an increased ability to read and respond to social cues. This heightened social cognition might help the mother build stronger bonds with her partner and support system during pregnancy

  • Pregnancy can lead to alterations in the brain's stress response system. Some studies indicate a decreased response to stress, possibly as a protective mechanism to ensure a healthy environment for the developing fetus

  • The changes in the brain during pregnancy are thought to contribute to the development of maternal instincts and behaviors. These changes help the mother become more responsive to her baby's needs and better equipped to care for them.

We are genuinely incredible!
